California Artificial Reef Plan Listening Session
We are reaching out regarding the recently launched effort to develop a California Artificial Reef Program (CARP) Plan facilitated by California Sea Grant, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and California Ocean Protection Council.
The overall goal of the CARP Plan is to provide a consistent, framework for design, materials, and placement of different types of artificial reef projects, such as:
-
Species enhancement/restoration/
biodiversity (e.g. native oyster, kelp, etc.) -
Fishing or recreational diving
-
Multiple benefits (living shorelines, coastal resilience, etc.)
-
Compensatory mitigation
The CARP Plan will become a key guiding document that outlines a shared, evidence-based understanding of what components are needed for successful artificial reef projects. This should pave the path for consistently well-designed and beneficial artificial reef projects, as well as more streamlined permitting processes.
