In person: filmmaker Sofia Coppola, actor Kirsten Dunst This adaptation of Jeffrey Eugenides’s debut novel is the first feature written and directed by Sofia Coppola, who since its release has celebrated an astounding career as a multihyphenate filmmaker on seven subsequent features. Set in the upper-middle-class suburb of Grosse Pointe, Michigan, the film follows a clique of teenage boys, now grown men, reflecting on the five elusive Lisbon sisters, who all died by suicide when they were teenagers. Coppola’s first feature-length film was shot by Academy Award–nominated cinematographer Edward Lachman in dreamy 35mm Kodak Vision, with music composed by the French electronic duo Air in what NME, Rolling Stone France, and Pitchfork have proclaimed one of the best film scores of all time. The Virgin Suicides... marked the first of three collaborations Coppola has enjoyed with Kirsten Dunst, who would later star in Marie Antoinette (2006) and The Beguiled (2017). Taking inspiration from Peter Wier’s Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) and Takashi Homma’s suburban photography, Coppola’s debut is a nuanced depiction of teenage ennui and a milestone coming-of-age film for generations of young women.
